Sip, gargle, sip

lemonsOne of the apprentices woke up this morning with a sore throat. Fortunately  we have had a spate of lemonade making and the fridge is still stuffed with lemons. A hot honey and lemon drink to start the day seemed just the job, followed by a lemon gargle every few hours. I make it with the juice of 1/4 lemon to 1/4 pint water, boiled and cooled. You could use three or four drops of lemon oil instead if you don’t have fresh lemons to hand.  Geranium oil also works as a gargle. Again three or four drops diluted in warm water,  every few hours.

I prefer to gargle with sage and cider vinegar when I am similarly afflicted.  Use 4oz sage leaves, heated with 112ml cider vinegar for 10 minutes in a covered pan. Strain and dilute with equal amounts of water, add a few drops of myrrh oil. This acts as an antiseptic.  Keep it in a sterlised jar and dilute to taste with warm water for use during the day.

If you can get your children to gargle this, you’re doing better than me.  

I might make up the echinacea throat spray in this book . as a little experiment. It’s simple enough provided you don’t wait until your tonsils feel like tennis balls to make it.  5 peppermint leaves and 5 sage leaves finely chopped, 3 cloves (always a hit in this house) and 30ml echinacea purpurea tincture mixed together and left in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks. Strain through a loose weaved muslin, squeezing out all the juice by hand. Filter into a sterilised spray bottle and use as required. Apparently it will keep in the fridge for up to a year. The echinacea tincture can be bought at healthfood stores.

There’s also has a recipe for a sage and honey remedy but I can’t see that being any more popular with the little people on the plot than my own concoction. What home remedies do you use for sore throats?
