There are some plants that should be in every garden. They are real ‘feel good’ plants which really earn their place, beautiful to look at,useful and relatively easy to look after. Echinacea is one of those.

This one is echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower), a great cut flower which doesn’t really need to be dead headed, will self seed and is tolerant of poorish soil, drought and even cold. Bees love it and it will last and last. Perfect for the cutting garden, herbaceous border or allotment.

I have found Echinacea angustifolium to be a bit more difficult. This narrow leafed variety is the one used by native North Americans for its medicinal properties to treat all sorts of ailments….headaches, sore throats, whatever really. I love the fact that I’m growing a plant that was being used hundreds of years ago.
